Desert Shores has recently been named one of the hottest neighborhoods in America by the real estate firm Redfin. And for full disclosure, I lived in Desert Shores for years and loved it!
Affordable to luxurious lakeside living in condos and custom homes
This community was built in the late 1980s and early 1990s around 4 interconnected man-made lakes and is just 20 minutes northwest of the Strip. And unlike the super-luxurious, super expensive custom homes in Lake Las Vegas, these lakeside homes, townhouses, and condos are more affordable.
Fishing and boating from your back yard
Fishing is just one of the many recreational activities residents enjoy at Desert Shores. The homeowners association stocks the lake with fish annually. Small quiet boats — row boats, kayaks, sculls, electric boats — are allowed on the water and some homes with lake frontage have small docks. Residents can rent paddle boats from the Homeowners Association in the spring and summer.
While there is no swimming allowed in the lakes, many of the larger homes have pools. There is also a lagoon style swimming pool next to the Community Center which is open exclusively for residents during summer.
All homes in Desert Shores are in the modern Spanish style — pastel stucco with red tile roofs– and the community’s streets are tree-lined.
There are a few townhomes in the gated Desert Shores Racquet Club, some of which also have lake frontage and small docks. A complex of small, affordable condos are near the northeastern edge of the community.
The Lakeside Shopping Center in Desert Shores is home to Marche Bacchus, a charming bistro and wine seller which has won “Best of Las Vegas” year after year.
A residents-only community center with an outdoor pool and sports
Near the Community Center is the large lagoon-style swimming pool with a sandy beach and, during summer, lifeguards. In the same residents-only area are basketball, volley ball and bocce courts, plus picnic and BBQ facilities. And there are miles of walking and biking paths.
And more good news: the ski runs at the Mt. Charleston ski resort are only a little more than a half an hour drive from Desert Shores. The snow at Mt. Charleston is usually powdery and in summer the ski resort is a lovely, cool place to go for brunch with a view of the northern end of the Las Vegas Valley.
